Khantoke Platter
The Lanna way to feast. A khantoke is the low, round tray Northern Thai families gather around to share many small dishes. Ours brings together Northern Thai favourites in one platter — the best first order for the table.
กิ๋นข้าวแล้วกา? — “Have you eaten yet?”
Smoky chilli dips, slow-cooked Haeng Lay curry, herb-packed Sai Aua sausage and baskets of sticky rice — cooked by a chef who grew up in Chiang Mai, right here on Little Bourke Street.
At Chiang Mai (also known as @Chiang Mai or ACM) is a Northern Thai — or Lanna — restaurant at 132–138 Little Bourke Street in Melbourne's CBD. Our chef grew up in Chiang Mai and cooks the food Northern Thai families eat at home: herby, smoky and built around sticky rice, rather than the sweet coconut curries most people know as “Thai food”.
Come for the Lanna specialties — the Khantoke sharing platter, Haeng Lay pork belly curry, Sai Aua sausage and Nam Prik Noom green chilli dip — and stay for Thai favourites, whole crispy barramundi, Thai beer on tap and cocktails.
We brought the buzz of a Chiang Mai night market to Little Bourke Street. Outdoor tables, cold Thai beer, sizzling Mookata and sweet treats — the place to eat, drink and hang out with friends in the middle of Melbourne.
Lanna was the old kingdom of Northern Thailand, with Chiang Mai as its capital. Its food is earthier and herbier than Bangkok's — less coconut, more grilled chilli, galangal and fresh herbs, always with sticky rice.

Chiang Mai's famous pork belly curry. Slow-cooked with warm spices until rich, sweet and tangy — no coconut milk.

Northern Thai pork sausage packed with aromatic herbs and spices, grilled until the skin snaps.

A smoky green chilli dip — chillies, shallots and garlic charred, then pounded. Mildly spicy and very moreish.

Northern Thailand's tomato and minced pork chilli dip — savoury, rich and gentle on the heat.

Tender steamed beef with a fragrant Northern Thai dip of galangal and dried chillies.

Our homemade crispy pork crackling — what every Chiang Mai local scoops nam prik with.

Northern Thai (Lanna) food uses little coconut milk or sugar. It is built on grilled chillies, herbs, galangal, fermented flavours and sticky rice, with chilli dips (nam prik), herb sausages and spiced curries like Haeng Lay. Central Thai food, the style most restaurants serve, is sweeter and richer, with coconut curries and jasmine rice.
